From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. A thief gang flees from the police and catches a night train with Toe, an unlucky guy who is now their hostage. There're many wealthy passengers in the train, so the thieves take advantage to rob the passengers. Oddly, when the thieves rush into the bogie, all they could see is just empty seats. Then, Toe is accused to be the one who told the passengers to escape from the train before they could begin to rob. Now, Toe has to run away before the thieves kill him. Luckily, there's a pretty girl named Ratree comes to save him in time, and tells him the horrible story of the train. There's something mysterious about the train and the passengers that Toe has to confront.
